Europol Busts ATM Heist Ring

In a coordinated effort, Europol and law enforcement agencies from Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands have successfully dismantled a criminal ring suspected of orchestrating explosive attacks on ATMs in Austria. The operation, which culminated on August 19, 2025, led to the arrest of four individuals believed to be involved in the crimes.

Authorities report that the suspects, primarily Dutch nationals, were part of a well-organized group responsible for multiple ATM attacks using solid explosives. The group allegedly scouted locations weeks in advance, targeting machines with minimal security to maximize their chances of a successful heist. During the raids, police seized EUR 16,500 in cash, explosive devices, and vehicles used in the logistics of their operations.

The investigation revealed that the Dutch-led group collaborated closely with German accomplices, who played a crucial role in providing logistical support, including the rental of getaway vehicles. These high-powered vehicles were used to flee the scenes of the crimes, which often caused significant damage to surrounding areas and posed serious risks to residents.

Europol’s involvement was pivotal in the success of this operation, as cross-border collaboration enabled authorities to piece together the group’s activities and plan a strategic takedown.
