Queensland Police Service (QPS) has partnered with seven schools in the Logan District to launch a creative road safety initiative during Queensland Road Safety Week, running from August 18 to 22. The collaboration aims to remind drivers to stay vigilant on the roads through personalized messages written by students. The initiative involves students from years three to six who crafted personal road safety messages on coffee collars, which will be distributed at The Coffee Club in Slacks Creek. These messages, encouraging safe driving practices, were part of a broader effort by the District Crime Prevention Coordinators (DCPCs) to engage the community in road safety awareness. Senior Constable Lou Carey, a Logan DCPC, emphasized the importance of this educational approach, stating, “Engaging with kids through road safety education isn’t just about teaching the rules of the road – it’s about building trust, breaking down barriers, and showing young people that we’re here for them.” The police service hopes that these messages will resonate with road users and reinforce the commitment to safe driving. QPS also highlights the significance of addressing the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviors: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction, as key factors in reducing road incidents. The initiative underscores QPS’s dedication to reducing road fatalities and fostering a safer community, starting with young people’s involvement and education.
