In a significant appeal, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has called on Pakistan to cease the forced return of Afghan refugees who possess proof of registration (PoR) cards. This plea was made by UNHCR Spokesperson Babor Baloch during a press briefing in Geneva on Tuesday. The UNHCR is concerned about the potential humanitarian impact of these forcible returns, emphasizing the need for Pakistan to adhere to international legal obligations regarding the treatment of refugees. The agency has reiterated its stance on protecting the rights of Afghan refugees and ensuring their safe stay in host countries until conditions in Afghanistan improve. The call comes at a time when the situation in Afghanistan remains volatile, with many refugees fearing persecution and instability should they return. The UNHCR continues to work closely with Pakistani authorities to find a humane and lawful solution to the refugee crisis, advocating for voluntary repatriation and providing necessary support to those affected.
