In a decisive move to tackle firearm theft, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) has launched Operation Whiskey Firestorm, urging registered firearm owners across the state to enhance the security of their weapons. This initiative underscores the critical message, “Safety First, Secure Always,” as QPS collaborates with regional and rural communities to reduce firearm thefts and enforce legal storage obligations under the Weapons Regulation 2016. Detective Superintendent George Marchesini highlighted the growing concern over improper firearm storage, citing cases where firearms were stolen from unlocked storage areas. He emphasized the need for firearms to be kept in rigid, secure containers made of solid steel and fitted with reliable locks, with ammunition stored separately. The operation aims to cultivate a culture of responsibility among licensed firearm owners to prevent weapons from being used in serious crimes. Operation Whiskey Firestorm is a comprehensive statewide initiative addressing firearm safety and illicit firearm activities. This comes in response to 2024 data that recorded over 3,290 firearm-related offences, including severe crimes like attempted murder and robbery. The operation will involve extensive audits and regional operations to ensure adherence to safety regulations and ownership rules. The QPS encourages the public to report any unsafe firearm storage through Policelink or Crime Stoppers, reinforcing the commitment to community safety. The operation reflects QPS’s dedication to halting unlawful firearm use and fostering collaboration with the community to maintain a secure Queensland.
