In a bid to enhance public safety, the Darling Downs District police have conducted over 360 wandings following amendments to Jack’s Law earlier this month. The operation, termed “Operation Marshall,” involved high visibility patrols where officers used hand-held scanners to detect illegal weapons in public spaces. Between July 18 and July 30, law enforcement carried out 361 wandings across the district, targeting locations such as shopping centers, licensed premises, and various public areas. The operation led to the arrest of a 41-year-old Sunny Nook man, who was found outside a hotel on Lamb Street, Murgon, in possession of two knives, a replica handgun, drugs, and drug paraphernalia. He faces multiple charges and is scheduled to appear in the Murgon Magistrates Court on August 26. Superintendent Doug McDonald emphasized the ongoing commitment of the police to deter knife crime, highlighting the devastating impact of such weapons when misused. “Our officers will continue proactive operations to remove illegal knives from the community while educating the public on the risks associated with unlawfully carrying weapons,” McDonald stated. Jack’s Law was established following the tragic 2019 stabbing of 17-year-old Jack Beasley on the Gold Coast, aiming to prevent similar incidents and maintain public safety. The full legislative details are accessible online, ensuring transparency and public awareness of the measures in place to combat knife crime.
