Samsung Electronics has announced that Juyeon Song, a prominent researcher at the company, will lead the 6G Spectrum Drafting Group within the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Conference Preparatory Group for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (APG-27). Song’s appointment underscores South Korea and Samsung’s growing influence in the development of next-generation 6G technology. The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) serves as an intergovernmental body that promotes information and communication technology advancements across the region. With 38 member countries, the APT Conference Preparatory Group (APG) collectively strategizes for the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC), scheduled for October 2027. Song’s leadership is expected to unify regional efforts to propose new 6G spectrum bands at WRC-27, aiming for advantageous outcomes for Asia-Pacific. Juyeon Song brings extensive experience to her new role, having previously chaired the 5G Vision Group for the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) and contributed to the 5G standardization process. Her appointment marks a strategic move by Samsung to bolster its 6G ambitions, emphasizing the company’s commitment to securing mid-band spectrum, crucial for its mobile communications expansion. Since 2019, Samsung has significantly invested in 6G research, notably through its Advanced Communications Research Center (ACRC). The company has also published influential white papers outlining its vision for next-generation mobile communications. As Samsung navigates the evolving landscape of 6G technology, it plans to focus on technology development, global standardization, and spectrum acquisition, reinforcing its leadership in the global telecommunications sector.
