Police in Mackay Whitsundays are intensifying their efforts to curb the illegal use of electric motorcycles and Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) as children head back to school. Known as Operation Wolfking, this initiative began in January and has resulted in 54 charges for offences such as driving unlicensed, uninsured, and unregistered vehicles. Officers have conducted 35 street checks and issued 82 infringement notices, primarily for failing to wear an approved helmet and riding on prohibited roads, each carrying a $166 fine. Other violations include operating unregistered, unlicensed, or uninsured e-bikes. Sergeant Daniel Goldburg of the Mackay Whitsundays District Highway Patrol emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety laws, particularly regarding helmet use and road restrictions. “We want to ensure kids and parents are aware of the laws surrounding e-bikes and PMDs,” stated Goldburg. “Officers will continue to enforce road safety to make sure everyone reaches their destination safely.” The Queensland Police Service is committed to reducing road fatalities and encourages the public to adhere to safe driving practices. The operation serves as a critical reminder about the dangers of the ‘Fatal Five’ driving behaviors: speeding, impaired driving, not wearing seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction, which significantly contribute to road accidents.
