In an engaging display of community outreach, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) hosted its annual Open Day at the Bob Atkinson Operational Capability Centre in Brisbane, drawing over 5,500 attendees eager to explore potential careers in law enforcement. The event, held on July 26, 2025, provided a comprehensive look at the diverse roles within the QPS, with more than 20 specialist units, including the Dog Squad and POLAIR, showcasing their capabilities.

Acting Commissioner of Police Shane Chelepy highlighted the importance of the event in connecting the community with the myriad career opportunities available within the QPS. “We are excited to showcase our world-class BAOCC training centre and welcome future police recruit applicants,” Chelepy stated, emphasizing the value of hands-on interaction with recruiting officers and live demonstrations.

Superintendent Renee Kurtz of Recruit and Constable Training underscored the event’s role in centralizing information for prospective recruits. The Open Day provided attendees with a unique chance to view state-of-the-art training facilities and learn about various career pathways in policing, arousing significant interest among attendees.

QPS recruit Morgan Owens, who transitioned from the Communications Centre to frontline policing, shared her journey, illustrating the diverse opportunities available within the service. “Training at the academy has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done,” Owens remarked, highlighting the impact of her experiences on her career trajectory.

With over 1,800 applicants in the recruitment pipeline and more than 670 recruits currently in training, the QPS continues to attract individuals passionate about serving their communities. The next Open Day is scheduled for August 2 at the Townsville Police Academy, offering another chance for the public to explore the possibilities of a career with the Queensland Police Service.
