Ukraine has strengthened its defense cooperation with the European Union, focusing on joint production and the newly introduced SAFE instrument. In a recent meeting, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Ihor Zhovkva, met with Benedikta von Seherr-Thoß of the European External Action Service to discuss enhancing military support and cooperation. Zhovkva expressed gratitude for the EU’s military support and highlighted the necessity for increased weapon and ammunition deliveries. The meeting explored various support mechanisms, with particular emphasis on the SAFE instrument, which aims to bolster defense capabilities in both Ukraine and the EU. The discussions also addressed the integration of Ukrainian and EU defense systems, the initiation of joint production ventures, and support for Ukraine’s defense industry. This includes the manufacturing and procurement of military equipment such as drones, artillery shells, and long-range missiles. Key officials from the European Commission, including Simon Mordue and Arūnas Vinčiūnas, participated in the meeting, underscoring the EU’s commitment to strengthening defense collaboration with Ukraine.
