In a significant display of solidarity, the European Parliament was officially represented at the 30th Budapest Pride March, marking a historic moment for European values. Vice-President Nicolae Ștefănuță, alongside numerous Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from diverse political groups, joined the march in Budapest, highlighting the institution’s commitment to diversity and non-discrimination.

Vice-President Ștefănuță, representing the Greens/EFA group from Romania, emphasized the importance of protecting European values during his speech at the event. He articulated the European Parliament’s stance against the backlash on LGBTQ+ rights in Hungary, referencing the Parliament’s recent resolution condemning discriminatory measures under the guise of combating ‘LGBTIQ propaganda.’

“This is not just about Budapest. This is about all of us, about what kind of Europe we choose to build and protect,” Ștefănuță stated. He underscored the core values of freedom, dignity, and equal rights, asserting the right of individuals to express themselves and live openly without fear. The event was noted for its record number of participants, reflecting widespread support for LGBTQ+ rights within the European Union.

This engagement by the European Parliament occurs amidst ongoing concerns regarding the rule of law and freedom of assembly in Hungary. The institution remains vigilant and vocal in its advocacy for fundamental rights, as evidenced by its continuous monitoring and resolutions addressing these issues. The presence of European representatives at Budapest Pride serves as a testament to the Parliament’s unwavering support for inclusivity and equality.
