A 71-year-old man has been charged with deprivation of liberty and two counts of common assault following an alleged incident on a cruise ship off the coast of Queensland. The charges stem from an event involving a 14-year-old girl on Thursday night.

Detectives from the Gateway Child Protection and Investigation Unit apprehended the man at the Port of Brisbane. It is alleged that he confronted and grabbed the girl, who was not known to him, near a lift shortly before 11 p.m. The girl managed to alert nearby staff, who intervened. Fortunately, she was not physically harmed during the incident.

The police have objected to bail for the accused, who is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday, June 23. Authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information to contact Policelink or Crime Stoppers.

This incident underscores the ongoing vigilance required to ensure safety on cruise ships and other public spaces.
