Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have expressed strong support for the EU membership efforts of Montenegro and Moldova, highlighting significant progress in recent resolutions. The reports, adopted in a plenary session with overwhelming support, acknowledge the strides both nations have made towards European Union integration despite facing various challenges. Montenegro remains a leading candidate for EU membership, aiming to join by 2028. MEPs commended the country for aligning with the EU’s foreign and security policies and for its efforts in tackling organized crime and corruption. However, they emphasized the necessity for continued reforms in Montenegro’s electoral and judicial systems and stressed the need for political stability to mitigate foreign interference and disinformation campaigns. Moldova has also been recognized for its commitment to EU accession, with MEPs applauding the government’s dedication to aligning national laws with the EU acquis. Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Russian interference in its democratic processes, Moldova is making headway in meeting EU enlargement criteria. The European Parliament urged the European Commission to increase support for Moldova to assist in its integration journey. Both countries are seen as strategically important to the EU, with MEPs underscoring the critical need for continued reform and vigilance against external threats to ensure a smooth path towards membership.
