On June 17, 2025, during the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a pivotal meeting focusing on increased support for Ukraine and imposing new sanctions on Russia. As Ukraine faces one of the largest attacks since the war began, Carney announced significant aid and sanctions to assist Ukraine in its defense and recovery efforts.

Prime Minister Carney expressed condolences for the recent Russian strike that resulted in 15 deaths and over 130 injuries, targeting civilian infrastructure. In response, Canada will impose sanctions on Russian individuals, over 40 companies, and more than 200 vessels involved in evading sanctions. Additionally, Canada pledged over $2 billion in military aid, including drones, helicopters, and ammunition, with part of the funds aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s domestic defense industry.

The two leaders discussed strategies to undermine Russia’s defense capabilities and coordinated diplomatic efforts with NATO, the G7, and other allies. Carney emphasized Canada’s commitment to supporting Ukraine until a just peace is achieved, while Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness for peace talks and the importance of sustained international pressure on Russia.

The meeting also addressed enhancing Ukraine’s air defense and potential joint weapons production projects, along with Canada’s role in Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction. Both leaders reinforced their commitment to deepening defense cooperation and supporting Ukraine’s efforts on the battlefield.
