Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol is urging motorbike riders to prioritize road safety after a recent incident involving a motorcyclist caught speeding at an alarming rate. According to QPS Media, nine lives have been lost on Sunshine Coast roads this year, with five of those fatalities involving motorcyclists. This highlights the vulnerability of motorbike riders on the roads.

Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho emphasized the need for increased caution and awareness on the part of all motorists, as well as the responsibility that riders themselves have in ensuring their safety. The recent case involved a 28-year-old man who was detected traveling at 134km/h in a 60 zone on Sandalwood Lane at Forest Glen on May 24. The individual was also found to be riding an uninsured motorbike without a valid driver’s license and under the influence of cannabis.

As a result of the incident, the man received multiple traffic infringement notices, a 24-hour driver’s license suspension, and a Notice to Appear in court. Queensland Police are committed to reducing road trauma by targeting behaviors such as speeding, drink or drug driving, and distraction. The community is urged to partner with law enforcement in promoting road safety and preventing further tragedies.

Drivers are reminded to avoid the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviors that contribute to serious crashes: speeding, drink and drug driving, failure to wear seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction. Road safety is a collective responsibility, and everyone is encouraged to stay informed about safe driving practices on Queensland roads.
