A delegation of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from the Civil Liberties Committee is set to visit Slovakia on June 2-3 to assess the developments related to democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights in the country. The delegation, consisting of four MEPs, will hold meetings with various stakeholders including government officials, parliamentarians, judiciary, NGOs, and journalists.

The MEPs on the delegation include Javier Zarzalejos, Sophie Wilmès, Daniel Freund, and Milan Uhrík. They will meet with representatives from the Slovak Government, the National Council, the judiciary, and other relevant authorities to gather first-hand information about the situation in Slovakia. The visit follows previous sessions conducted by the LIBE Committee’s Monitoring Group focusing on the country.

In response to recent events in Slovakia, such as the murder of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová, the European Parliament has been closely monitoring the situation in the country. The delegation aims to address concerns about threats to democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights, as well as the fight against corruption across all member states.

A press conference is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 14:30 CEST in Bratislava, where the MEPs will share their findings and insights from the visit. Media queries can be directed to Ján Jakubov, the EP Press Officer in Slovakia. The visit is part of ongoing efforts by the European Parliament to uphold EU values and principles in member states.
