Nine Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are set to visit El Hierro on the Canary Islands on May 26-27 to evaluate the situation regarding irregular arrivals of migrants and asylum seekers on the Western African route. The delegation from Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice, and Home Affairs Committee aims to gather firsthand information on the challenges faced by local migrant reception centers and authorities and explore ways to support the affected regions. Led by the Chair of the Civil Liberties Committee, Javier Zarzalejos, the MEPs will engage with various stakeholders, including local, regional, and national authorities, law enforcement, civil society organizations, and EU agencies.
