President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine recently met with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, to discuss the situation at Ukrainian nuclear power plants, particularly the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This meeting, held in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, focused on the need for IAEA presence at the Zaporizhzhia NPP to ensure compliance with international law and prevent any potential restart of reactors by Russia. Grossi emphasized the lack of safety conditions for such a restart, and the discussion also addressed the safety of other nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, damaged by a Russian drone strike. Cooperation projects between Ukraine and the IAEA for nuclear energy development were also on the agenda, to be presented at the upcoming Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome.
