Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul, thanking him for his continued support for Ukraine and prayers for peace. The meeting took place on Oct. 31, ahead of the patriarch’s 35th enthronement anniversary on Nov. 2.

Zelenskyy briefed Bartholomew on Ukraine’s efforts with international partners to pursue peace, including ongoing contacts with the United States. He also discussed the situation in Ukraine and repeated Russian strikes targeting energy infrastructure and other systems essential to daily life.

The two also addressed a humanitarian operation in the temporarily occupied city of Oleshky, where people were successfully rescued. Zelenskyy called the operation an important result and said Ukraine hopes continued international pressure on Russia will help expand similar de-escalation efforts.
