Foxtel has been found to have breached Australian broadcasting laws after tobacco branding appeared during its coverage of the New Zealand Grand Prix, the Australian Communications and Media Authority said on Oct. 20, 2026.

An ACMA investigation found that a vintage race car displaying two cigarette brands was shown on Fox Sports during approximately 20 minutes of coverage on Jan. 31, 2026. The branding appeared repeatedly, including in slow-motion replays and a close-up lasting about 40 seconds.

Under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, broadcasters must not air tobacco or e-cigarette advertisements in breach of the Public Health (Tobacco and Other Products) Act 2023. ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood said the branding could have a promotional effect regardless of the vehicle’s historical or commemorative context.

In response to the breach finding, Foxtel will introduce internal guidelines, quarterly staff reminders and additional training. The company will also update its processes for acquiring future motorsport content. The ACMA said the case was its first tobacco advertising investigation since the 2023 legislation took effect.
