NASA will hold a news conference Oct. 20 to preview two upcoming spacewalks that will complete the installation of roll-out solar arrays on the International Space Station. The briefing will begin at 2 p.m. EDT from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston and will be streamed online through NASA’s live events platforms.

The spacewalks are scheduled for Oct. 29 and Nov. 5. During both operations, NASA astronaut Anil Menon and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk will work outside the station to install the seventh and eighth International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Arrays, known as IROSAs.

The first spacewalk will deploy an array on the station’s 2A electrical power channel. The second will install the final array on the 3B channel, completing the station’s planned power augmentation upgrades. Together, the eight arrays are expected to increase available power by up to 30%, raising the station’s generation capacity from 160 kilowatts to approximately 215 kilowatts.

The operations will be the 285th and 286th spacewalks conducted to support space station assembly, maintenance and upgrades. U.S.-based media seeking to attend the briefing in person or participate by phone must contact the Johnson Space Center newsroom by 3 p.m. EDT Oct. 19. NASA said additional coverage information will be released closer to each spacewalk.
