Ukraine marked the Day of Defenders on Oct. 1 with ceremonies honoring fallen soldiers, messages from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a series of meetings focused on national security, international support and sanctions against Russia.

Zelenskyy paid tribute to fallen Ukrainian warriors and addressed students at military and security-focused lyceums during oath-taking ceremonies. He said Ukraine’s resilience was rooted in its frontline positions and emphasized the role of defenders in securing the country’s future.

The president also met with the principal and teachers of a Kyiv school damaged in a Russian “Shahed” drone strike that caused a fire, partially destroyed a wall and damaged windows and doors.

In diplomatic engagements, Zelenskyy discussed bilateral cooperation and joint projects with members of Japan’s House of Representatives, thanking Japan for its economic and humanitarian support. He also met ambassadors from European Union member states to discuss Ukraine’s urgent financial and defense needs, air defense, progress toward EU accession and increased sanctions pressure on Russia. Separately, presidential sanctions adviser Vladyslav Vlasiuk held talks with civil society representatives on strengthening sanctions-related efforts.
