Ukraine Seeks Stronger Air Defenses

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed the latest Russian strikes and efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses during separate phone calls with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Sept. 30, 2026.

Zelenskyy thanked both leaders for their continued support and briefed them on what he described as a new escalation of Russian attacks against Ukrainian cities and communities. He said air raid alerts had continued for much of the day in Kyiv and other regions, while authorities faced a persistent threat from jet-powered Shahed drones and overnight ballistic missile strikes.

In his discussion with Stubb, Zelenskyy focused on measures to reinforce Ukraine’s overall air defense capabilities and improve the effectiveness of its F-16 fighter aircraft. He and Støre also discussed the equipment and assistance Ukraine needs to respond to Russia’s intensified attacks, including additional air defense support and aid for its F-16 fleet.

“We are coordinating our steps and working to provide greater protection for people’s lives and security,” Zelenskyy said.
