Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed securing Patriot missile interceptors and additional winter assistance for Ukraine during a meeting in New York on Sept. 24, 2026. Zelenskyy briefed Rutte on the damage and casualties caused by three waves of Russian ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv. He said Ukraine has developed capabilities to intercept cruise missiles and drones but continues to rely on Patriot systems as its primary defense against ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian president also said the two officials discussed Ukraine’s broader anti-ballistic defense needs. Zelenskyy thanked Rutte for his willingness to seek solutions, warning that Russia’s threats could endanger other nations as well.
