Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited a school in the Kyiv region on Sept. 1, congratulating students and teachers on the start of the new academic year. The visit took place as schools across the country continued operating under the threat of Russian attacks. Teachers held initial lessons in a shelter following a Russian aerial attack, including a nationwide class on dignity and respectful communication for students in grades one through four. Zelenskyy joined students in a quest activity and wished them success during the school year. Speaking to journalists, the president said Russian strikes on infrastructure had sought to disrupt the start of the academic year. He also criticized what he described as limited international responses to the attacks and thanked parents and teachers who continue supporting children’s education in Ukraine despite air raid alerts. The school visited by Zelenskyy was destroyed in March 2022 and fully rebuilt by last autumn. It now includes a shelter, backup energy systems, updated classrooms and sports facilities, and a renovated cafeteria providing free hot meals to students.
