Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France and Germany to discuss renewed diplomatic efforts toward peace and greater European involvement in the process. The May 22 discussion took place in the E3–Ukraine format with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s position had strengthened on the battlefield and through its long-range operations, arguing that continued pressure could support more effective diplomacy. The leaders agreed that their national security advisers would meet in the near future. Zelenskyy also briefed them on what he described as Russian plans involving Ukraine, Belarus and other parts of Europe. According to the Ukrainian president, the countries’ teams will exchange additional intelligence regarding Russia’s political and military intentions.
