Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for closer coordination between the Ministry of Defense and the country’s armed forces during the introduction of a new defense minister on Aug. 20, according to the presidential website. Zelenskyy said decisions by defense authorities should reflect the needs of the front line, air defense, deep-strike operations and mid-range strike capabilities. He also made auditing existing agreements with international partners a top priority, including determining which commitments have been fulfilled and which remain outstanding. In a separate address, the president said Ukraine needs additional missiles for Patriot air-defense systems. He argued that only partner countries can provide the systems and said Ukraine is prepared to purchase the weapons, urging political decisions from allies, particularly the United States.
