Konovalets Reburied in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the reburial ceremony for Colonel Yevhen Konovalets at the National Military Memorial Cemetery on Aug. 18, according to the Ukrainian presidential office. The ceremony brought together senior government and military officials, lawmakers, clergy, veterans and members of the public.

Attendees observed a moment of silence for Ukraine’s fallen defenders. Sviatoslav, head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, presided over a Divine Liturgy and memorial service for Konovalets, whose remains were returned to Ukraine after decades abroad.

Zelenskyy described Konovalets as a prominent military leader and statesman whose life represented Ukraine’s struggle for independence. He said the reburial restored a measure of historical justice and honored the memory of Ukrainians who fought for a sovereign state.

The president thanked Ukrainian organizations in Canada, historians, diplomats and others involved in preserving Konovalets’ memory and arranging the return of his remains. Konovalets was reburied at the cemetery on a temporary basis and is expected to be transferred to the planned Ukrainian National Pantheon once construction is completed. Zelenskyy also paid tribute to more than 300 Ukrainian defenders buried at the memorial site.
