A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal single-vehicle crash at Stratford, near Cairns, that killed a 12-year-old boy and injured three adults.

Queensland Police said officers were called to Stratford Road about 4.13am on June 21 after an allegedly stolen grey Toyota Fortuner left the road and rolled. The boy was declared dead at the scene, while adults aged 19, 20 and 22 were taken to Cairns Hospital.

Police allege the man broke into a property on Pomona Avenue and stole the vehicle before driving it when it crashed. He was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, two counts of dangerous operation causing grievous bodily harm, and several other offences, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and driving over the general alcohol limit.

Police bail was refused, and the man was due to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on August 18. The case reference is QP2601186653.
