Samsung Electronics is expanding the use of Eclipsa Audio, its immersive 3D audio technology developed with Google, across live entertainment content on Samsung TV Plus. The technology is designed to recreate the spatial characteristics of a live performance through compatible Samsung televisions and soundbars. Built on the open Immersive Audio Model and Formats (IAMF) standard, Eclipsa Audio reproduces sounds in three-dimensional space, including performers’ voices, orchestral music, venue acoustics and audience reactions. Samsung said the system adjusts sound placement according to the playback setup, while unsupported devices automatically play standard stereo audio. The technology was developed through a collaboration between Samsung Research and the company’s Visual Display Business. Samsung said the teams tested the system by capturing audio at a 280-seat concert venue, converting it to Eclipsa Audio and streaming the performance through Samsung TV Plus. Engineers also developed methods to transition smoothly between immersive programming and stereo advertisements on the service. Samsung plans to expand Eclipsa Audio content beyond musicals and live performances to include K-pop concerts, classical music, films and sports. Company executives said future developments could allow viewers to personalize audio, such as emphasizing vocals, instruments, commentary or stadium sound.
