International collaboration between French and Spanish law enforcement agencies, with critical support from Europol, has culminated in the arrest of four individuals linked to a hazardous waste trafficking operation. The suspects were apprehended in Spain, charged with smuggling large quantities of demolition waste from France, which posed significant environmental and public health risks. The investigation revealed that this illicit network had been transporting thousands of truckloads of potentially carcinogenic materials such as shredded foam, paper, insulation, cardboard, polystyrene, wood, and plastics annually. The materials were illegally buried in Spain, leading to severe contamination of soil, water sources, and farmland. The criminal activities are believed to have generated millions of euros in illegal profits. Europol played a pivotal role in the operation by coordinating the joint efforts, providing crucial intelligence and financial backing, and deploying experts to assist on the ground during the raids. Multiple locations in France and Spain were targeted, leading to the seizure of significant amounts of electronic devices and documents. The operation was a collaborative effort involving the French Gendarmerie (OCLAESP), the Spanish Guardia Civil (SEPRONA), and Catalonia’s Waste Agency (ARC).
