Crackdown on Mobile Number Fraud

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has recently intensified its enforcement actions against mobile number fraud, imposing significant penalties on telecommunications companies found in violation of industry standards. In the past 18 months, these penalties have amassed nearly $5 million, signaling a strong push towards safeguarding consumer interests.

Latest reports highlight actions taken against SpinTel Pty Ltd, which incurred a fine of $59,400 after an investigation revealed a system vulnerability exploited by scammers. This breach led to unauthorized mobile number transfers and financial losses exceeding $45,000 for 10 consumers. Additionally, SpinTel is now bound by an 18-month court-enforceable undertaking to overhaul its security systems based on independent review recommendations.

ACMA’s crackdown does not stop at SpinTel. Yomojo Pty Ltd received a formal warning for failing to adequately inform its customers about the steps to take if they suspect being victims of mobile number porting fraud. Under the Telecommunications (Mobile Number Pre-Porting Additional Identity Verification) Industry Standard 2020, telcos are mandated to confirm the identity of customers prior to transferring mobile services and to provide clear guidance on fraud prevention.

Samantha Yorke, an ACMA member, expressed deep concern over the lax security measures in place at many telecommunications providers, which put consumers at risk of substantial losses. She urged all service providers to enhance and rigorously test their security protocols to prevent such vulnerabilities. Consumers affected by phone scams are advised to immediately contact their service provider and financial institution, and can seek additional support from IDCARE and mental health services like Lifeline and Beyond Blue.

This enforcement is part of ACMA’s ongoing effort to protect consumers and clamp down on mobile number fraud, a prevalent issue affecting numerous Australians each year.
