A devastating multi-vehicle accident in Banya, Sunshine Coast, has resulted in the death of a three-year-old girl and left several others injured. The incident, which occurred on January 8, involved a series of collisions initiated by a Mitsubishi Fuso truck on Banya Avenue.

According to the Queensland Police Service, the accident happened near the intersection with Bruny Street around 11:40 am when the truck struck a silver Nissan Qashqai from behind. The truck then continued to collide with a blue Haval station wagon, which was stopped in a traffic line at Great Keppel Way intersection. Subsequently, a black Toyota Rav4 and a white Toyota Hiace, positioned in front of the Haval, were also impacted.

The three-year-old victim, a rear passenger in the Haval, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Queensland Children’s Hospital, tragically passing away the following day, January 14. The 37-year-old female driver of the Haval and several others were transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The truck driver, a 52-year-old male, received minor injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit is actively investigating the crash circumstances. Police are appealing to anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage, or who witnessed the event, to come forward. They can contact Policelink or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

The Queensland Police Service underlines the importance of avoiding the ‘Fatal Five’ behaviors — speeding, impaired driving, non-use of seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction — to reduce road fatalities. The community is urged to contribute to road safety.
