A tragic e-bike collision on the Sunshine Coast has resulted in the death of an 8-year-old boy and led to serious charges against a 15-year-old. The incident, which occurred late last month in Mountain Creek, has shaken the local community.

On October 30, at approximately 3:36 pm, emergency services rushed to a bike path near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange following reports of a crash involving two young e-bike riders. The 8-year-old victim was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The Queensland Police Service’s Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU) conducted a thorough investigation, which culminated in the arrest of a 15-year-old boy from Buderim on November 18. He faces charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, unlicensed driving, and operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. The accused is scheduled to appear in Maroochydore Children’s Court on November 26.

This incident underscores the Queensland Police Service’s ongoing commitment to road safety and their efforts to educate the public on avoiding critical driving errors known as the ‘Fatal Five’: speeding, impaired driving, not using seat belts, driving while fatigued, and driving distracted. The community is reminded that road safety is a shared responsibility.
