A devastating traffic incident in Margate has led to the death of a 17-year-old girl and subsequent legal action against a 58-year-old man. The Queensland Police Service reported that detectives from the Redcliffe Child Protection Unit have charged the Scarborough resident following the accident that occurred late last night on November 17.

The incident unfolded when a white Nissan Navara ute, driven by the accused, struck the pedestrian on Margate Parade at approximately 11:27 PM. Authorities allege that after the collision, the driver did not remain at the scene to provide needed assistance. The young victim, identified only as a Boondall girl, succumbed to serious injuries at the scene.

In a swift response, police located the involved Nissan at a residence in Scarborough early this morning. The driver has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and failing to remain at the incident scene to obtain help. He was denied police bail and is scheduled to appear at Redcliffe Magistrates Court on November 19.

Police are urging anyone with additional information or relevant footage to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. Reports can be made anonymously through Crime Stoppers or by contacting Policelink using their online suspicious activity form.

This tragic event has stirred the community, prompting calls for heightened awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such incidents in the future.
