President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has announced a comprehensive effort to enhance the nation’s defense capabilities in response to ongoing Russian drone and missile attacks. In a public address, Zelenskyy outlined a multi-pronged strategy aimed at intercepting these threats, which includes acquiring new equipment and strengthening domestic production.

The President highlighted recent Russian tactics involving concentrated drone strikes, with approximately 339 “shahed” drones launched overnight in a single attack. While Ukrainian forces have successfully intercepted a significant number of these drones, the sheer volume poses a persistent challenge. Tragically, recent strikes resulted in casualties, including two fatalities in Chernivtsi, and damage across multiple regions.

In response, Ukraine is negotiating agreements to acquire new Patriot missile systems and expand its production of interceptor drones. Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of international partnerships, specifically thanking the United States and European allies for their support in enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

The President also discussed legislative priorities with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, including the ratification of international agreements and the establishment of a Special Tribunal for Russian aggression crimes. These efforts are part of Ukraine’s broader strategy to secure its sovereignty and protect its citizens amid ongoing conflict.
