In a major operation coordinated across Italy, Spain, and Albania, Europol supported the arrest of 28 individuals associated with the notorious ‘Ndrangheta crime syndicate on 8 July 2025. The suspects, of Italian and Albanian nationality, are accused of running a sophisticated drug trafficking operation that imported cocaine from South America to Europe, with sales concentrated in Rome.

The operation was executed with precision by special intervention teams, targeting key figures within the network. Among those apprehended is an Italian national from Calabria, believed to be the mastermind behind the cocaine distribution network in Rome’s San Basilio area. This individual and his three sons allegedly collaborated closely with an Albanian criminal group responsible for logistics.

The investigation unveiled that substantial quantities of cocaine were shipped to Europe in containers, with Calabrian brokers allegedly facilitating transport from the Gioia Tauro harbor to Rome. The criminal network is suspected of trafficking over 1,019 kilograms of cocaine and 1,497 kilograms of hashish through 80 operations.

The arrests also highlighted the violent methods employed by the group to maintain control, including the kidnapping and torture of a drug dealer. The brutality was documented and circulated to instill fear among members. The investigation further revealed the use of encrypted messaging to evade detection, orchestrated by an Albanian service provider who was also detained.

Europol’s involvement was pivotal, providing analytical support and fostering collaboration between Italian and Spanish authorities, which led to multiple arrests. This operation underscores the effectiveness of international cooperation in dismantling organized crime networks.
